Tower Ladder 38 Lifts Wounded Construction Worker to Safety

A unidentified worker at the Rivers Edge apartment complex construction site in Sleepy Hollow fell off a ladder this afternoon, requiring a dramatic tower rescue from the Sleepy Hollow Fire Department.

Many emergency vehicles – Sleepy Hollow Ambulance, paramedics, police and the fire department – arrived to the riverfront construction site around 4 p.m. to get a man out who witnesses say had fallen from the two-story wooden scaffolding he was erecting.

Village Administrator Anthony Giaccio was also on the scene and said the Building Department was there and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) would be notified, as required by law for work-related injuries.

However, Giaccio said he didn’t think it likely that developer National/REsources would be found to be in any violation of local code as the man just fell from a ladder, he said.

A worker watching from the bank of the adjacent Horan’s Landing said there had been no other injuries on the site that he knew of. “You have to be careful,” said Joe. “I don’t know what happened with this guy. He was on a ladder."

There’s no stairs yet in the building, so the rescue crew had to be hoisted up in the basket of Engine 38's tower, load the man in, and bring him down to the waiting ambulance crew.

Workers on the scene said the man was not critically injured but suffered possible back and shoulder injuries.
