Video: Sleepy Hollow Police Department's Annual Awards Ceremony

The event, held on Saturday, honored members of the department and civilians who went above and beyond the call of duty.

On Saturday, the Sleepy Hollow Police Department held their 2nd annual Memorial Service and Awards Ceremony in the James Galgano community building.

The awards were given to officers, and members of the public, who had distinguished themselves in service over the past year.

Award Recipients

 

Sgt. Eldryk Ebel, Officer Eduardo Fortunato, Tarrytown Sgt. John Barbalet and Tarrytown Officer Brian Macom.

The Exceptional Merit award was given to these officers for risking their lives to make sure all families in the homes of 13 and 19 Cedar Street had been evacuated that destroyed their residences.

Officer Felix Corona, and Jeffrey Muendel

Were given the Life Saving award for for helping save a women who had severe blood loss during the month of April 2011. The officers helped stem the loss of blood, and the woman was transported to Phelps Memorial Hospital by the Ambulance Corps and survived even though she lost "pints" of blood. 

Officer Jeffrey Muendel 

Was given the Meritous Police Work honor for helping apprehend a criminal caught with quantities of pills and marijuana.

Officer Hector Rosario and Officer Stephen Dougherty

Were awarded the Meritous Police Work honor for making a traffic stop and subsequent arrest for narcotics. later led to a number of other individuals being charged with narcotics-related crimes.

Officer Jeffrey Muendel and Sgt. Richard D'Alessandro

Were awarded the Meritous Police Work honor for who attempted to sell Officer Muendel drugs while he was undercover. Muendel was then attacked by the man while D'Alessandro called for backup and helped take the suspect into custody. 

Sgt. Michael Gasko, Officer Craig Kelly, Officer Jeffrey Muendel and Fire Chief John Korzelius

Were given an honorable mention for their actions in preventing an individual from attempting to hang himself.

Unit Citation

Unit citations were given to Lt. Anthony Bueti, Officer Hector Rosario, Det. Jose Cotarelo, Det. Michael Hayes, Sgt. Michael Gasko, Officer Stephen Dougherty, Officer Jeffrey Muendel, Officer Vincent Lombardi and K-9 Gunner.

Civilian Awards

Civilian awards were given to Tarrytown resident John Stiloski, Manny Perna of Choice Pets, Dr. Brian Green at the Sleepy Hollow Animal Hospital and Cindi Valentine, who is Secretary to the Chief of Police.

Two other members of the public were acknowledge, but not named, because they helped in undercover operations to check liquor establishments and purchase narcotics.

In Memory Of

The department also took the time to recognize the passing of retired Det. and past Chief .

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
