Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, who is waging an underdog campaign for governor against strong incumbent Andrew Cuomo, is looking to tap into anger over the state's Common Core standards by creating a ballot line this fall to stop the policy.

Newsday writes that the Republican challenger will need 15,000 signatures on a petition by next month to make the ballot line "Stop Common Core" a reality. Astorino's own children do not participate in the Common Core exams.

“Our family’s protest tomorrow is a symbolic one,” Astorino said in a four-minute video March 31 that he posted on his campaign website. “But as parents, we think it’s important to take a stand. Our children aren’t guinea pigs, Governor Cuomo, and we want them educated by teachers – not faceless bureaucrats in Washington.”

On Syracuse.com, reporter Michelle Breidenbach writes that Cuomo campaign spokesperson Peter Kaufman said Astorino's move to create the ballot line was "pathetic pandering." If successful, Astorino will gain votes from three lines, Republican, Conservative and Stop Common Core.

"These more rigorous standards will be used to help New York students better prepare for college and career," Kauffman told Syracuse.com.

Common Core will prepare our children to only a two-years college: how is this high standards? It is a one size fits all type of education and it is an horrible, terrible experiment on our children. Pearson and Gates are the one making tons of money with the Common Core crap and our children will lag behind because of this. Four years ago Cuomo said that he was going to be an advocate for our children's education: I am still waiting to see advocate for our children. He has failed them miserably and he really needs to go. Astorino's children are in public school, so he sees what they are coming home with and he is a parent. I trust him more than Cuomo! Cuomo should be fired for the terrible job he has done overall for the state!

It would be great if parents had a fair way to get their kids out of public education. Public schools were indoctrination centers long before the common core standards arrived. Public education was sinking in standards long before common core arrived. Where was everyone before this? Where were/are the teachers? Oh, and how counterproductive are the teachers unions? It's a mess. Things don't get better in this state, in case you haven't noticed.

Cuomo's launching the Women's Equality Party. Here in the nanny state, voters will find that especially appealing. These sleazy libs are always one step ahead.

Hope Astorino gets beat so bad that his political career is ended. Can you say 40 points?
