[POLL] Old Tappan Zee Bridge Slated for Demo?

Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner reacts to the news that bridge will not likely be saved as a park.

After a report out today that New York State will likely demolish the existing Tappan Zee Bridge when a new bridge is built, a leading proponent of saving the old bridge for use as a public park expressed his dissappointment.

"I’m extremely disappointed," said Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner. "A Tappan Bridge park would have been a world class destination point, similar to the high line and walkway over the Hudson. It would have helped the local economy —hotels would generate business from tourists."

The New York State Thruway Authority is now saying that it is not expecting to move forward with proposals to keep the old bridge as a recreational resource. The idea, touted by Feiner, even got some support as Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the option should be explored.

"Local businesses on both sides of the river would have generated more traffic and customers," Feiner said. "And, the quality of life of residents would have been enhanced –w ith  an amazing bike and pedestrian walkway. I had envisioned concerts and sculpture gardens on the bridge."

Feiner said the Tappan Zee Bridge park would have added excitement to the overall project.

"I hope the state reconsiders," Feiner said.

The final environmental report on the bridge replacement project is due out today.

Honestly lets recap we are building a new bridge why?? Because the old one is unsafe but yet it is safe for a park.- this bridge is in my backyard I will be directly effected by the construction and deconstruction - I have not heard Feiner or Cuomo say anything regarding the tax payers that live within such close proximity. Not to mention the bridge is known as a suicide hot spot... But I guess suicide is good for the economy as well.

The one up north just looks like a project unfinished.
