Sleepy Hollow Clerk Marries Volunteer Firefighter

A Union Church wedding for couple.

Village clerk weds

Sleepy Hollow Village Clerk Paula McCarthy and Earl Tompkins, a longtime volunteer firefighter in Pocantico Hills, married Nov. 11 in a ceremony at Union Church in Pocantico Hills.

Tompkins is from Mahopac where he graduated from Mahopac high school. He was a longtime employee of GreenRock Corp in Pocantico Hills. McCarthy graduated from Sleepy Hollow High School.

This is a second marriage for both, who now have five kids between them ranging in ages from 8 to 24.

Kendall meeting

Making their annual pilgrimage north, trustees will gather Dec. 4 at Kendal on Hudson to conduct their regularly scheduled work session. Public comments are welcome, Mayor Ken Wray made clear.

“We ordinarily do not have them at a work session,” he said, “but we invite them [at this meeting].” Located at 1010 Kendal Way, Kendal on Hudson is a not-for-profit assisted living facility on the Hudson River shoreline.

“Look forward to seeing you all there,” the mayor said. He'd made a point of the meeting’s 7:30 start time, a departure from both the usual 7 o’clock beginning as well as the time posted on the village website.

Holiday parking

The board voted Tuesday to suspend metered parking in the village for two weeks, Dec. 17 to Jan. 2, when holiday bags will cover the devices.

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
