Three candidates will square off for the chance to face U.S. Senator as the Republican candidate in November’s general election.
Wendy Long; U.S. Rep. Bob Turner, R-Queens; and Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos are the candidates in Tuesday’s Republican primary.
Long, a Manhattan-based attorney, has already received the endorsement of the state’s Conservative Committee. She has also received endorsements from a number of people including former U.S. Ambassador John Bolton, television personality John Bolton and state lawmakers Annie Rabbitt, Nancy Calhoun, Steve Katz, and William Larkin.
Turner, was elected to Congress last year during a special election, which was held to replace Democrat Anthony Weiner. Turner has received endorsement from former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former U.S. Rep. Guy Molinari, and radio personality Rush Limbaugh, along with GOP committees in Bronx, Queens, Albany, Rockland, Sullivan and Ulster counties.
Maragos, who was elected to the comptroller’s seat in 2009, has received endorsement from Tea Party and GOP committee in Nassau and Suffolk counties. He has also received support from the following Nassau County-based state lawmakers: Dean Skelos, Jack M. Martins, Charles Fuschillo, Carl Marcellino; Michael Montesano, Brian Curran, David McDonough, Tom McKevitt, Joseph Saladino and Edward Ra.
Long received 47 percent of GOP delegate votes and in March during the Republican Convention in March, which was the most received by the three candidates.
But that momentum has slowed entering the primary, according to the results of a Siena Poll that was released June 11. The poll showed that Gillibrand held a lead of 38 percentage points over Turner, 42 points over Maragos and 43 points over Long.
The poll also showed that 70 percent of all Republicans are unsure who to vote for with Turner gaining the support of 16 percent followed Long at 11 percent and Maragos at 3 percent.
