Westchester Businesses Take a 'Green' Challenge

Tarrytown businesses to be recognized at Edith Macy Conference Center.

Westchester business owners, including some from Tarrytown, will gather in Briarcliff Manor Thursday evening to be recognized for their "green" achievements.

l Westchester Green Business Challenge (WGBC) will culminate in an awards ceremony at the at 5 p.m., where Westchester County Executive Robert Astorino and Business Council of Westchester President and CEO Marsha Gordon will be on hand to recognize this year's recipients.

Described in a statement as a "friendly competition," the WGBC asks county businesses to "move down the path toward environmental sustainability while saving money."

Astorino reflected, “The Green Business Challenge has grown from the bottom up, and provides one large umbrella under which companies can exchange best practices and promote themselves as leaders in sustainability."

Small and medium-sized businesses who sign up for the challenge receive a scorecard which offers "dozens" of ways for the businesses to decrease their carbon footprints—from scaling down water use to printing double-sided.

Local businesses including the , , , the , and are among this year's dozens of honorees.

Outreach, Energy, Transportation, Land Use, Water Resources and Waste/Recycling/Green Procurement awards will also be handed out.

The new Charles W. Brown, Jr. Sustainability Award will be given on Thursday to C.W. Brown, Inc.—an Armonk-based construction management company—in memory of its founder, who passed away just before .

“Charles Brown was a visionary leader within the Westchester County business community and a leading advocate for sustainable business practices,” Gordon said. “One of his proudest accomplishments was becoming the first commercial site in Westchester County to gain LEED Platinum Certification, a highly prestigious distinction which has made C.W. Brown, Inc. an emblem of Westchester’s green future.”
