UPDATE: Tarrytowns Cancels Saturday School Budget Workshop

UPDATE: The March 29, 2014 Budget Work Session has been canceled. The next regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting will take place on Thursday, April 10th.

--------------------------------

The Tarrytowns Board of Education will hold its last budget workshop March 29 to go over the $70,897,640 spending plan proposed by Superintendent Christopher Clouet.

The proposed budget is 3 percent higher than the current spending plan, with the biggest spending increases coming for health insurance premiums and teacher retirement contributions.

The spending plan carries an estimated property tax rate increase of 2.12 percent in Tarrytown and 1.94 percent in Sleepy Hollow.

The superintendent's budget presentation includes this interesting example of how times have changed:

  • This year, the district is serving 2,849 students with 455 employees.
  • In 2001-02, there were 25 percent fewer students—2,278—and 465 employees.
This Saturday's workshop is the last of three. It starts at 8:30 a.m. in the board room. On the agenda: Appropriation Decisions, Revenues, Board adoption of budget propositions.

The trustees are expected to adopt a final plan April 10, and hold the mandated public hearing May 8. The budget vote is May 20.

The district would also ask voters May 20 to approve using money unspent in 2013-14 to buy:
  • 1 7-Passenger Suburban @ $40,000 (replacement for aged vehicle). 47.7% State Aided; Voter authorization required
  • 2 vans @ $55,000 each (replacement for aged-out vans) 47.7% State Aided; Voter authorization required
  • 1 Pickup w/Plow and sander @ $29,405 (replacement for aged vehicle) 47.7% State Aided; Voter authorization required
