Sports Digest: Boys Indoor Track Champions

Congratulations to the Sleepy Hollow High School boys' indoor track team, who won the League Championship.

Welcome to Patch's snapshot of sports in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.

From the TUFSD:

Congratulations to the boys’ indoor track team. On Sunday, January 13th, the boys won the League Championships!

This is a huge deal for Sleepy Hollow, who last won the league in 2001. The win was capped off by a win in the 3200 relay which was an upset win.

Will Stallings had a meet to remember. He ran 6.6 seconds in the 55m dash placing second overall. It was an extremely close race that took the officials over 10 minutes to decide the winner. He threw 41' 8" in the shot put to win the event and anchored the winning 800m relay team. The team of Dom Onwe, John Lara Mota, and Danny Elia ran a school record of 1:35.9! Dom also placed 3rd in the 55m and 300m. Danny Elia placed 2nd in the triple jump and 600. David Maldonado placed 1st in the mile and led off the winning 3200m relay team. Jack Schnog, Ryan Higgins and Luke Colley were also a part of the All-League relay team. Isaiah Sanjuan placed 3rd in the long jump and 4th in the high jump. Every athlete contributed to this team championship.

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
