Sleepy Hollow Girls and Boys Basketball Both Win Playoffs Games Sunday, Play Wednesday and Monday

The 6th ranked Sleepy Hollow girls varsity basketball team defeated #11 Hendrick Hudson on Sunday 55-46 in the first round of sectional play.  The girls play # 3 Rye away on Wednesday at 5 PM.

Meanwhile, the 24th ranked boys team, now 7-12, shocked #9 Peekskill in an outbracket game and play #8 Byram Hills at 1 PM today.

The girls team, now 17-2, had a first round bye, but looked sharper after 9 days off with all of the snow delays than in their final two regular season games, leading Hen Hud nearly start to finish.

Jenny Bucci sparked the team with 17 points, including 5 three pointers; Alex Davis-Sumter had 8 points and 10 boards; Grace Carr added 17 points, including 9 of 10 from the foul line while playing with 4 personal fouls.  In a typical team effort, Jess Tucci, Vanessa Onwe, Becca Leeper and Jamie Volpe all provided the points, rebounds and defense needed for the win.

The gym was crowded with boisterous Hen Hud and Sleepy fans; the one things both sides could agree on was their affection for the referees.   Hen Hud played a tough game, coming as close as 3 points in the final minutes and forcing Sleepy to hold back one run after another.

Like almost every game this season, the Rye game will have its own long-standing subplots, stretching back to 3rd and 4th grade CYO grudge matches between Resurrection of Rye and Transfiguration of Tarrytown, times when parish names seem particularly apt.

Players and parents of athletes who play a given sport year round are probably familiar with how many times your path crosses with particular players, coaches and even officials while driving up and down the eastern seaboard, playing four games a weekend.

Some games, like last night's, end with a bit of sadness after a well-liked former travel teammate is eliminated, others times not so much.

As the season winds down, apologies for the sometimes less than stellar pictures - it's hard to take photos, keep stats and scream at the refs.
