'Mom-Approved' Sites We Can All Feel Good About

It's important for parents to be educated on online safety but what are sites that are "Mom Approved" that are also cool and entertaining destinations for kids?

With eMarketer predicting Internet usage numbers for US children to hit 25.7 million by 2015 — educating both children and parents about online safety is a must.  As providing a safe environment is a top priority for us, we pulled together a list of “MOM APPROVED” online destinations that can allow parents to feel comfortable while still letting their children browse independently.

A variety of some of the most trusted and safest educational and entertaining destinations for kids on the web follows below:

1. Educational site:
www.factmonster.com – Fact Monster is a colorful, interactive site that offers kids facts on a variety of subjects (math, geography, quizzes and more) in a down-to-earth, approachable manner. My personal favorite, the “Who are these people, anyway?” section which teaches kids about ethnic groups from all over the world!

2. Health and Wellness site:
www.kidnetic.com – Kidnetic is an awesome resource to help kids stay healthy! The site provides lists and animated images to teach kids all about healthy eating, information on how their bodies function, and great exercise activities.

3. Activities site:
www.funology.com – Funology is the best place online for kids to find magic tricks, funny jokes to master, trivia questions and craft projects to do at home! And with its colorful aesthetic and easy-to-maneuver site, this is an awesome resource for kids to draw inspiration for a day of activities and entertainment at home!

4. Kids-safe browser:
www.kidzui.com – KidZui is a downloadable browser for parents to download jam-packed with millions of kid’s websites, online games, pictures and youtube videos! Kids have the freedom to browse and parents can rest easy, knowing that their children are only able to access sites that have been approved by the KidZui’s editorial staff, parents, and teachers.

5. Gaming site:
www.GirlsgoGames.com – I know, I know, you might have expected us to say this, but GirlsgoGames is THE top site for tween girls gaming, with a variety of fun free, online games, including Sara’s Cooking Class to Pet Shop Hop and Shopaholic World. Kids are entertained and able to be social with other kids all over the world in a totally safe environment, as GirlsgoGames employs community managers to patrol the site and requires parents permission for user registration.

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
