Rivertown Runners Donates 10K Proceeds

Numerous local organizations benefited from funds raised from October's Rivertown Runners Sleepy Hollow Halloween 10K.

The Rivertown Runners announces donations made through its RTR Outreach Fund of over $6,000 to various local organizations.

“As always, we want to thank the Village of Sleepy Hollow and all the Village Departments that assist us with [the 10K event]," said Todd Ruppel, noting, "We even had trustee Bruce Campbell as a course marshal.”

The donations made from the proceeds of the hugely popular Sleepy Hollow Halloween 10K include:

  • $3,500 to the RSHM Center
  • $1,000 to the Open Door Foundation
  • $1,000 the Community Opportunity Center
  • $1,000 to the Sleepy Hollow Volunteer Ambulance Corps
  • $150 each to both the Girl and Boy Scouts

There were also prior donations made of $500 each to the Food Pantry and the RSHM Center to answer the immediate needs of those effected by Superstorm Sandy.

RTR made contributions to the track and field/cross country scholarship which will be awarded this year.

“The RTR Outreach Fund wants to thank Phelps Memorial Hospital, all the volunteers, sponsors, runners and the RTR members for making this possible," Ruppel said.

Next up? The Half Marathon is set for March 23, 2013 and will highlight parts of the Rockefeller Preserve.

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
