Join the Robin Birrittella Run

A beloved resident will be honored and the causes she loved supported by another Crest neighborhood run/walk held on September 8.

After the success of , the organizers just plan to keep the momentum going.

“We really anticipate a larger crowd and just build upon the success from last year,” said Lisa King, Sleepy Hollow teacher who organizes the event with Karen Doyle.

The 5K, which begins with a kids run and also has the option of 1-mile walk, begins and ends at the and raises money for charities and scholarships in honor of a woman people call “legendary.”

A loving mother of three, Birrittella's support and sheer kindheartedness helped shape the tight-knit Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow areas. Birrittella died of cancer on Aug. 14, 2010.

An active real estate broker, Birrittella was a big supporter of Sleepy Hollow athletics as well as walker who enjoyed her long strolls through the Crest neighborhood.

“The money raised will be donated to charities and award a Sleepy Hollow High School senior a scholarship in Robin's name,” said King.

The event is held on Saturday, September 8 and begins at the Crest Pool on 70 Midland Avenue in Tarrytown with a free Fun Run for kids at 8:30 a.m. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. (along with the option for walkers to do a 1-mile route) and costs $35 to register in advance or $40 that day. The first 100 participants will get a t-shirt. Medals go to the top 3 winners in each age group.

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
