Tarrytown's Jeannette Ho Rows Dragon Boat

In a few weeks, this Tarrytowner/breast cancer survivor will be rowing with 22 teammates touched by the disease in the Peekskill celebration.

Tarrytown's Jeannette Ho is among 22 women, breast cancer survivors and sympathizers closely touched by the disease, who have been training to row on the NYC-based Empire Dragon Boat Team in the first ever Breast Cancer Survivor race to be held during the annual Peekskill celebration on August 3 and 4.

This obviously spirited woman was last seen on Patch in a Santa hat, coordinating the event in our villages. Now, she's taking her energy to the waterways.

In Ho's words:

Believe, believe, believe...

3 cancers later and my life has been reminiscent of an amusement park...a rollercoaster ride, full of ups 'n downs and unexpected turns that leave you feeling somewhat topsy-turvy. However, all of these peaks and valleys have somehow brought me to a point in my life that is filled with clarity and gratitude. What I am thankful for is an amazing team of doctors, a tremendous support system of friends and family, for laughter and for EMPIRE, my dragon boat team...ALL which have and continue to fuel my strength and hope every single day!

The "BIG C" is known for rocking many people's worlds, but thankfully there is an unspoken comfort you feel with those who know this journey like you do. Picture a boat full of 22 women who share the passion to paddle and inspire with every stroke...we paddle to raise awareness, to share our experiences and to spread our hope!

Whether "in memory of" or "in honor of," in treatment or in remission, we are ALL survivors.

And from her dragon boat team website:

Empire's mission is to spread awareness of the sport and its benefits to women who have battled cancer. Our team is committed to raising funds for cancer research and direct service to cancer patients.

2012 marks the YEAR OF THE DRAGON so come celebrate with us - we look forward to an inspiring, intimate and exciting weekend of networking and Dragon Boat festivities for BCS Teams! Peekskill Celebration will be hosting a weekend full of events, which will begin on Friday evening, August 3rd featuring live music and a Paddle Party along the river.

The Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday, August 4th will include at least three races for all BCS Teams as well as many activities and an evening of spectacular fireworks along the scenic Hudson River.

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
