We have our share of martial arts in the villages (one studio in Tarrytown and one in Sleepy Hollow) but up until recently, there's been no Aikido.
First off, what's Aikido?
According to Aikido teachers Crystal and Kevin Kanesaka on their new website, tarrytownaikikai.com:
Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba, who is referred to affectionately by Aikido practitioners around the world as O-Sensei, or The Great Teacher. O-Sensei is arguably the preeminent martial artist of his day. His vision of martial arts emphasized on the development of self for the betterment of the individual which in turn benefited society at large. This vision became Aikido. Physically, Aikido techniques develop a strong, flexible body. Spiritually, Aikido can be a venue to becoming a better individual, aware of one's individual position as relative to society at large, and as one with the universe around them.
Class offerings include:
- Aikido-Inspired Parent and Me (for toddlers aged 18 months to 3+ years)
- And Kid's Aikido Class (for ages 4 to 7+ years)
Both meet in summer sessions in August starting next week and it's not too late to sign up if you do so immediately. For those who miss August, a back-to-school schedule starts mid-October with more of the same.
Want to talk to the Kanesakas in person first? If it's not raining, come by the next Third Friday event where they will have a table.
