New To The Gallery This Week

New works by artist Paula Estey will be on display from this week at Tappan Z Gallery.

New to the gallery inventory this week are engaging works by Paula Estey. Paula's work is both personal and universally appealing and we'll be putting them on display at the Labs Roasters from this week. Paula is based in Newburyport, Massachusetts and her flawless mixed-media technique has developed over years of honing her skills and is considered top secret by the artist. Her rich and sumptuous blending of materials is technically masterful, while always in service to the greatest good: a finished painting that reflects artistry, poetry, spirited humor, and above all, deep compassion. Her goal is to put nostalgia back in the brain, for the viewer to feel the adventure of their own past, whether real or imagined as they reflect on Paula Estey's work.

"I am moved, as always, by the process of art-making. It allows me to chart, as both observer and map maker, my course through life. Art-making is a personal place-holder for tragedy and beauty, drama and mystery. Art can describe, narrate, assuage and transform.

These are a painted story about life and death, life and dying; about reverence and fear, acceptance and faith; about rebirth. It is a simple reflection, through this woman’s eyes, of life: how fast it goes, how quickly changed, how revered, adored, and mourned."

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
