Wolfpack Season Starts Strong

Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow athletes take on opponents from Westlake, Armonk and more.

Here's a rundown of some of the opening football games of Wolfpack's fall season:

Wolfpack 5th & 6th Grade:  The Wolfpack 5th & 6th grade team took home an exciting victory in their opener against the Westlake Wildcats at Westlake H.S.  After a long drive, the Wolfpack opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 15 yard TD run from Harrison Halesworth.  The extra point was no good.  Westlake fought back with a long broken play TD run and an extra point to make the score 7-6 Wildcats.  After a Wolfpack turnover in the 3rdquarter, the Wildcats took advantage with another touchdown and extra point, giving Westlake a 14-6 lead heading into the 4th quarter.  Showing no quit, the Wolfpack went on a run.  Behind the strong running of Mekhi Green, Myles Walker, Dylan Nelson, and Halesworth, and Ben Good’s passing to Alex Mazon and Nelson, the Wolfpack roared back.  A two yard TD run from Halesworth put the score at 14 -12 Westlake, with 4:30 remaining.  The defense which was strong all day, led by Stefan Mozdziak, Justin Hotetz, and Quinton Thornton forced a punt, which Myles Walker took all the way back to the Westlake 20 yard line.  With 1:30 left in the game, and no timeouts remaining, it was three straight runs by Halesworth, who scored from one yard out for his third TD of the day, giving the Wolfpack an 18-14 lead with 19 seconds remaining.  With all three timeouts remaining, Westlake made their move to try to win the game, but on the final play, a long pass completion for a sure TD was thwarted by the hustle play of the game from Jake Zednik who amazingly ran down the receiver from behind, catching him on the 5 yard line to end the game!

Wolfpack 3rd & 4th Grade:  The Wolfpack 3rd & 4th grade team opened its season at Westlake H.S. against the Westlake Wildcats with a 12-6 victory.  An excellent  defensive effort forced 2 early fumbles which were recovered by Max McClung & Armani Curet, respectively.  The turnovers set up the offenses confidence building 1st quarter touchdown from Daniel Callanan.  Callanan’s score was set up by the fine running of Benji Adair & Michael Scaglione.  With the score tied at halftime 6-6,  Michael Scaglione turned the corner for the game winning score from 59 yards out to paydirt! TheWolfpack defense, led by aggressive play from Scaglione at linebacker, played very stingy with great tackling from the cornerbacks, Lorenzo Boccabella & Armani Curet.  With a record of 1-0, next Sunday, the 3rd & 4th Wolfpack take on Ardsley at Sleepy Hollow High School at 10:00 am.

Wolfpack Black Flag:  The Wolfpack black team lost its season opener 28-21 at the Pelton Lions.  The first half found the Wolfpack struggling to move the ball and grab flags. With the score 21-7 at the half, the Wolfpack kids settled down, giving up only one more score after half time, and scored twice after long runs by Julian Guzman and Justin Fink set up short TD runs by Reilly Tuck and James Smith.  These scores brought the Wolfpack to within one score  to bring the wolfpack to within one score before time ran out.

Wolfpack Red Flag:  The Wolfpack Red Flag team took the field this past Sunday versus Armonk White, who have always been tough competition for the Wolfpack. The Wolfpack took an early lead on a great outside run of 50 yards by Jai Weitzen, with some solid blocking by the line. Armonk was next to score and tie the game.  The Wolfpack, led by a solid group of 2nd graders and a very determined and disciplined defense were next to light up the scoreboard. It was a beautifully executed fake hand off by QB Nico Boccabella and RB Jack Macca that opened up the entire left side of the field for a bootleg touchdown run by Boccabella.  The Wolfpack defense led by Declan McCarthy, Macca, Weitzen, and Boccabella held the Armonk team in check all day until Armonk ran a great double reverse to score their second TD to tie the score.  The Wolfpack did not get rattled, and marched down the field and capped off another TD drive with another quick outside run by Weitzen to take the lead for good.  This was a great game for theWolfpack for their first game of the year and a great win against an always tough Armonk team. The experience on this team and the strong defense helped secure their first victory of the year.
