As the gears up to from the region on Friday, there are ample opportunities to start volunteering right here in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.
It happens to be National Volunteer Week this week, which is timely considering all the Earth Day clean-up/planting events coming up this .
Then there's , always on the lookout for kind citizens with a little extra time to get involved:
"We are very fortunate to have wonderful, caring people who want to give of their time to help others," said Pamela Cardozo, Director of Volunteer Services. "Our volunteers are very warm and comforting to the patient and contribute immeasurably to the hospital. They are goodwill ambassadors for Phelps Hospital and wonderful role models for our 'Culture of Kindness.' They take patient satisfaction personally - every patient, every interaction."
Last year, said Cardozo, volunteers worked a whopping total of 58,000 hours at Phelps, people varying in age from 14 to 96 (that would be Edna Coggins, 96, of Ossining).
Coggins has been volunteering at the hospital for 18 years and said she feels at home there. "I've always appreciated coming to Phelps to volunteer, because it gives me my own space away from home, and I enjoy being with all the people I've gotten to know over the years."
"We call these dedicated volunteers our 'Caring Experts,' said Cardozo. "Phelps thanks each and every one of them!"
