Meteorologist Joe Rao talks about the distance between the moon and mars.
Late Thursday night, skywatchers who cast a glance toward the waning gibbous moon in the eastern sky will also notice the presence of a very bright, yellow-orange "star" shining with a steady glow hovering a bit above and to the moon's right. That's no star, though. It's the planet Mars. The apparent distance between the moon and Mars will be rather large, amounting to about 9 degrees. That's roughly equal to the width of your fist held at arm's length. The sky map of Mars and the moon for this story shows how they will appear Thursday night to skywatchers with clear skies. New research finds that this Valentine's Day Americans, specifically men, are digging deeper into their pockets than ever before.
They say you can’t buy love, but research shows consumers are spending more than ever this Valentine’s season. According to Mother Nature Network, research from the National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates the total spending will reach $17.6 billion, with the average person spending more than $126, up nearly 10 percent from last year and the most ever in the survey's 10-year history. Not everyone will dig as deeply into their wallets, however. The average male is expected to spend $168.74 — nearly twice as much as women — on clothing, jewelry and greeting cards, among other things. Data shows consumers spend the most on their better halves, an average of $74. They’ll also spend an average of more than $25 on their children, parents or …
State Police Sergeant said autopsy tomorrow will reveal final results, but officials are all but certain it is Scott Uzzo of Hawthorne, who jumped from the TZ Bridge in late December.
State police are working to identify a body that was found washed ashore this afternoon behind the historic Lyndhurst estate in Tarrytown. According to MTA spokesperson Marjorie Anders, a track inspector found the body around 12:15 p.m., about one mile north of the Irvington train station. The recovery of the body “did not affect trains,” she said. Contrary to one previously published report in Lohud.com, there was no police boat coming up from the MTA. "We don't have a boat. This is not our investigation,” she said, saying the case in the hands of the State Police. State Police Inspector Noel Nelson, stationed in Tarrytown, said the scene was "all cleared" as of 3:30 p.m. but they still have to "examine a few factors" to make an …
Here's how to make homemade Valentine’s Day 'Krispie Treats' that kids will love to make and give.
Memories of my childhood Valentine’s Days always include piles of paper heart doilies, red and pink construction paper, glue and glitter. I adored creating what I was certain were masterpieces, despite the likelihood I misspelled names or inadvertently created glue globs on my homemade hearts. Though I would love to recreate those memories with my own children, I don’t seem to be raising any crafters. I can, however, cajole them into making sweets, especially if those confections include frosting and sprinkles. This year we are making heart-shaped Rice Krispie treats, decorated with melted white chocolate, frosting and sprinkles. They are incredibly easy and fun to make. First, make a batch of Rice Krispie treats - as per the original …
Roomier digs makes for happy drinkers at Captain Lawrence's Elmsford space.
Captain Lawrence will have no trouble filling its large new tasting room, as evidenced by the eager crowds there its augural first week. The official party for the new Elmsford location was Saturday, but even the night prior the room was full of people waiting behind a red-roped line to re-fill their growlers or taste and taste and taste their way through the five beers on tap. A sign on the wall states that by NY State Liquor Law you can enjoy no more than two three-ounce glasses of each beer, which adds up to a generous amount. One man came on his bike straight from work. Though he lives in Pleasantville and was sad to see the place move further from his home, now it's only a few minutes away from work. (His wife came to pick him up, and…

State selects four qualified bidders from five interested parties
Five bidders have reached out to the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and expressed an interest in building the new Tappan Zee Bridge. The four design-build consortiums deemed suitable are: NYSDOT and NYSTA will now issue a request for proposal to each consortium, which requires them to submit a preliminary plan for building the span. "After design-build proposals are submitted and reviewed, one of the four short-listed consortiums will be selected later this year to construct the new bridge," officials said…

We pose five quick questions to one local shopkeeper in this biweekly series.
First we talked roses with Flower Box's Arthur Cabezas. Now it's onto another VDay staple: strawberries...chocolate-covered, of course. Their source: Tarrytown's Edible Arrangements. Their spokesperson: franchise owner Randy Winston. So buy local and go say hello to.... Randy Winston of Edible Arrangements 1. What's the difference between Valentine's Day and any other day? RW: We sell four times the normal amount of fruit. We go from two drivers to eight to 10. Everything's quadrupled. It's tough because you have to deliver to businesses by a set time that day. The fruit is more expensive for us to buy, but unfortunately we can't raise our prices. 2. What's most popular for Valentine's Day? RW: The chocolate-covered strawberries are …

Obviously, nobody can single-handedly protest commercialism...without coming off as a jerk. So if you're going to drop the cash, at least support your local businesses! Think of it this way, local florists and jewelers need Valentine's Day to succeed, just like accountants need tax season.   more ›
