How telling about your reporting having a picture of give it all away and tax them Bramson Why notRead More give Astroino credit for attempting to encourage kids to do well, and help this kid and others whose parents did not follow the rules set forth get a special pass. Instead you are bashing Rob for trying. Talk about yellow journalism.

My daughter actually received the Playland pass on that wonderful day and her school had nothing toRead More do with her receiving the award. I read about the program in the paper and followed up. The program is fairly new (this is the second summer) and the staff working the program have a genuine interest in seeing the program succeed. They are warm and welcoming to the children and County Executive Rob Astorino genuinely makes the children feel special. I sincerely hope the program continues for years to come, drawing in many more deserving children each year.

Excellent program, provided someone or some company, or some governmental program puts in the moneyRead More to pay for the cost of these awards. Playland's budget should not be skewed by county programs, no matter how good they are.

I love how these morons' claims of freedom to practice their religion always involves puttingRead More innocent children's lives at stake. I suppose our right wing friends would call this nanny state interference, but I say thank GOD the gov't is willing to step in when a whack-job parent purposely puts their kids' lives in danger.

School isn't supposed to be day care. People need to pay for their own day care.
Debbie Forsyth June 27, 2014 at 01:17 am
@GW6----Teachers do NOT get paid for the summer. They get paid for a 180 day school year. The Dept.Read More Of Education decided to dole it out in 24 payments. Some schools in other counties in NYS have the option of getting paid in 20 payments or 24 payments. It's still the same annual salary divided by different numbers. Comes out the same either way. You get vacation time and it's part of your salary, not extra vacation pay, am I right?

No matter how the money goes out they get paid in Smithtown, on average, $100,000 with a benefitRead More package of almost $40,000. So maybe there should be a little more time spent working in the summer and making it more of a full time job like the rest of us seeing they get paid like us.

How about teaching them spelling and grammar? Geography and History would also be good for them toRead More learn. So many children complete school while lacking in basic skills.

I'd like to see CPR and AED training offered as an elective. I agree with Mark's suggestion that ALLRead More kids take business math. There are too many economically illiterates exiting HS and college.

We have to make people aware that our State is run by public employee Unions and we need court casesRead More like today which ruled that the California Teacher Tenure rules are unconstitutional so that we can change laws and vote people out of office who do not represent the interests of the public who pay the taxes.

Something that is interesting to note is that high school grads are going to four year universitiesRead More and studying subject that isn't marketable. While on the other hand you have people getting vocational training at vocational schools that essentially guarantees them a job out of school that will make them 'x' amount of money. Sarah Lawrence is a Yonkers-based school, not Bronxville-based.

Thanks for your comment, Louise, and thanks for your interest in Patch. Yes, there is truth to whatRead More you said, but in this case I used Bronxville based on what the school lists on its website: http://www.slc.edu/directory/. Additionally, the school has posted items in the past on the Patch Events Calendar and listed Bronxville addresses. I meant no disrespect to Yonkers. Thanks again.

I heard city teachers talking about a third party candidate. This isn't shocking. LiberalsRead More cannot, under any circumstances, vote for a prolifer. It really all boils down to that one issue. The whole charter school debate will be the stated reason they can't back Astorino, but some know better. I hate the idea Astorino scrubbed his charters school ideas from his website, because they weren't gonna vote for him anyway. Stand firm by your beliefs, Astorin. No waffling. If you're gonna go down, go down proud.

And now I see a NY Daily News piece that she's being courted by Working Families. I'm not shocked. They (the Left) need...no, NEED, someone besides Cuomo, and definitely besides Astorino. He's too Tea Party-ish. C'mon! Where are you?? You have all these blog posts.... the poetry thingy...probably cursive too.... Come back!!! Please tell me I've been right all along.

Hold a MySkoolTechAwards Show and sell tickets to pay for prizes and for the network firewall router. ;-) DONE.

Joe, you call it right wing ideology, I call it smaller government. We'd all be better off if govtRead More just left us alone. And that brings us full circle to common core, no child left behind, etc. You liberals got what you wanted: INTRUSION.
Theresa Flora April 4, 2014 at 06:53 am
The Dept of Ed doesn't educate children. Smaller govt is the idea here, no intrusion or overreach.Read More That's what CC is. NCLB was the same. Govt should leave everyone alone. Democrats and RINOs love big gov, and this is the result. Junk. Plus the teachers unions are in the way also. Can't leave them out.
Dan Seidel April 4, 2014 at 02:54 pm
Joe: it's "ad nauseam". You a product of Common Core? :>) You really think I amRead More "right wing"? I thought I was "correct wing". I used to be a lefty radical. Education comes from the community - teachers, parents, kids AND credo. The federal government is not charged with directing education or ed. policy - that is local and always has been and always should be - it has produced great thinkers and doers. Lately, as "my" people (the "Stalinists") gained control, we have lost it - we have lost our edge and what it truly means to be American. Instead we are all touchy feely now and p.c. This is no good. and you know it. Save MAYBE for the AP kids, the Intel science crowd, our education of the youth has sunk to empty depths I never thought I'd see. So yes, I'd abolish the fed Dept of Education, save all that $$$, toss the bureaucrats out - let them find real jobs. and keep the $$ home. I trust in he People (and the courts). Regional variations in ed. policies? yeah, as long as the Constitution is upheld and respected and as long as EVERY SCHOOL teaches American Exceptionalism, values and the joys of liberty. THAT is American ed. PS: no database collection of the children's vitals, biometrics, metadata, ed. evals., test scores - nothing centralized - ever. It is tyranny to have such a database and centralized control over the children. Do not give the government powers it is not entitled to - do not acquiesce. You would? why? to what end?
