Firefighters Mourn Death Of 54-Year-Old Mount Vernon Firefighter

Kevin Townes died of an apparent heart attack.

Westchester firefighters today mourn the loss of one of their own, 54-year-old Mount Vernon firefighter Kevin Townes, who died of an apparent heart attack at the scene of a house fire this morning. Townes, a 25-year veteran of the fire department, was one of more than 20 firefighters who raced to the scene of a fire early this morning on Lorraine Avenue. Fire officials said Townes collapsed suddenly and died at Mount Vernon Hospital despite efforts to revive him. Officials noted that Townes had recently passed a mandatory physical exam and city officials said the married father of three children was one of the city's outstanding firefighters. In White Plains, firefighters there were quick to post a note about Townes on their Facebook page…

One of Silicon Valley's greatest electronics and computer-industry pioneers succumbs to pancreatic cancer.

Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Computer, now Apple, Inc., died on Wednesday, about 9 months after he began phasing out his leadership of the company. When I was an electronics and computer-industry editor and conference director, I met with and interviewed Jobs on many occasions. He was to technology and Silicon Valley what Washington Irving was to American literature and Hudson Valley — a person capable of extending the boundaries of their profession well beyond what had ever been done before. An Internet campaign to make Friday, Oct. 14 "Steve Jobs Day," is under way, the San Jose Mercury News reports. One website, www.stevejobsday2011.com, says, "Wear a black turtleneck to work. To school. Anywhere and everywhere. You can even go full Steve and wear blue jeans and tennis shoes." Apple is not involved in promoting the movement.   more ›

Leopold Steiner, Former Tarrytown Resident

Steiner was a parishioner at Transfiguration Church.

Leopold H. Steiner, formerly of Tarrytown, died peacefully in Norwalk, CT surrounded by his family on Aug. 29, 2011, at the age of 91.  He was born in Graz, Austria in 1919 and moved to New York City with his family in 1937.   During World War II he served as a counter intelligence officer in Patton's Third Army. He served at Omaha Beach, St. Lo, the Battle of Metz, the Battle of the Bulge, and in the occupation of Nuremburg. While stationed in France, he met his future wife, Lucie Ochem. Together they raised four children in Tarrytown, NY and were parishioners at Transfiguration Church.   Mr. Steiner worked in New York City as a film business owner. Samuel A. Long, 71, of Sleepy Hollow

Long died on August 29, 2011.

Samuel A. Long, a longtime resident of Sleepy Hollow, died on August 29, 2011. He was 71. Mr. Long was born on August  21, 1940 to Gordon and Rose  Annicchiarico Long in Brooklyn. He served in the United States Army. He was employed as a foreman for General Motors Corp. for 30 years and also worked at Green Rock for 15 years. He was a past member of the North Tarrytown Auxiliary Police. He married Claudette Bellefleur on August 15, 1964 at St. Teresa of Avila Church in North Tarrytown. He is survived by his son Richard (Marisa) Long of Orangeburg and his 2 grandsons Steven and Dakota. He was predeceased by his wife Claudette in 2009 and his son David in 2003. Dennis P. Cohen, 67, of Tarrytown

Services will be held this Friday.

Dennis P. Cohen, a long time resident of Tarrytown, died on August 16, 2011. He was 67. He was born on January 25, 1944 to Louis and Betty Wood Cohen in Manhattan. He worked for many years as an accountant including several years working at Chrysler Motors in New York. He was a member of the Tarrytown Seniors as well as working for the Board of Elections as a poll worker. He was also a volunteer for the Senior Canteen at the Neighborhood House. He is survived by his wife Marion Gallagher, his daughter Staci Karbon of De Pere, WI, and his 3 grandchildren Ryan, Owen, and Brooke.  He is also survived by his brother. His funeral service will be held at Coffey Funeral Home at 12 p.m. on August 19.

Frank D. Rizzi, 91, Life-Long Sleepy Hollow Resident

Visitation will be this Tuesday and a funeral service will be held on Wednesday the 17th.

Frank D. Rizzi, a lifelong resident of Sleepy Hollow died August 13, 2011 at the age of 91. Born in N. Tarrytown on March 18, 1920, he was the son of Thomas and Maria Codella Rizzi. Frank graduated from North Tarrytown High School in 1940. He went on to serve in the United States Army during World War II. Frank worked in the Materials Department at General Motors and retired after 30 years with the company. He was a former vice president of Local 664 of the UAW and had been a Shop Committeeman. He was a member of the Sleepy Hollow Fire Department since 1946. He was a Life Active member and former President of Columbia Hose. He was a member of the Sleepy Hollow Seniors and ITALO. Former Supervisor and Ad Man Famous for Charmin Quote Dies

The wake for John Chervokas, advertising executive and public servant, is July 28.

Former Town of Ossining Supervisor John Chervokas, politican and ad man best known for the famous "Please don't squeeze the Charmin" commercials, has died. He was 74. The wake will be held at Dorsey Funeral Home in Ossining on July 28 from 5-8 p.m. His funeral will be on July 29 at St. Theresa Church in Briarcliff Manor at 11 a.m. John Chervokas began his public service career in the 70s as the president of the Ossining School Board. He was the director of the Ossining Chamber of Commerce in the mid-90s. In 1998 Chervokas began his first term as the Town of Ossining's supervisor. He proudly served the people of the Town of Ossining in that position until 2008. Before his career in politics, John was a Madison Avenue advertising executive. …
