Here's how to make homemade Valentine’s Day 'Krispie Treats' that kids will love to make and give.
Memories of my childhood Valentine’s Days always include piles of paper heart doilies, red and pink construction paper, glue and glitter. I adored creating what I was certain were masterpieces, despite the likelihood I misspelled names or inadvertently created glue globs on my homemade hearts. Though I would love to recreate those memories with my own children, I don’t seem to be raising any crafters. I can, however, cajole them into making sweets, especially if those confections include frosting and sprinkles. This year we are making heart-shaped Rice Krispie treats, decorated with melted white chocolate, frosting and sprinkles. They are incredibly easy and fun to make. First, make a batch of Rice Krispie treats - as per the original …
Naomi Vladek is founder of Naomi Vladeck College Essay Coaching.
Each week, we're going to share with you a local mom who we think is awesome. We'll ask her some questions and hear about how she manages life with kids in our area. We hope you'll enjoy getting to know some of our neighbors. Naomi Vladeck founded Naomi Vladeck College Essay Coaching in 2011. She lives in Sleepy Hollow Manor with her husband, Eric R. Putter and their children Sophie (6) and Levi (4). She write about college essay writing in a Blog for the Patch. Her website is under construction and will launch at the end of this month. 1. How do you balance being a mom and working? Naomi thinks of the word "surrender" when it comes to parenting. And, she says, like many moms, she practices "a lot of deep breathing." She tries to approach…

What would prompt Patch's columnist to post such an embarrassing picture? Something, she says, that's pretty powerful.
I know what you’re thinking. She’s finally lost it. But actually, I found it! What is ‘it’? ‘It’ is exhilarating. Scary. Adrenaline pumping. Liberating. ‘It’ is learning to not worry about what anyone else says. Yeah, yeah, we’re all grown-ups, and it’s not supposed to matter by the time we’re adults. With a child in the dreaded fourth grade—that magical time when the outside world starts to take on such huge importance in how you see yourself (and he’s not even in middle school yet!)—I know all the ‘right’ things to say to him when I hear about what everyone else is wearing or doing or watching on TV. With all the attention focused on bullying, it’s ground we cover all the time. Sticks and stones and words and all that. But sometimes I …

California's ban on same-sex marriage has been ruled unconstitutional by a federal appeals court. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday in a 2-1 decision that a lower court correctly determined that Proposition 8 was a violation of gay civil rights. The Huffington Post has a complete story. Prop 8 was a ballot initiative that sought to overturn an earlier court's decision that legalized same-sex marriage. Supporters of Prop 8 said they could take the latest ruling to the Supreme Court where they feel they would win. In the meantime, gay marriages are still on hold until the deadline passes for Proposition 8 backers to appeal to a larger panel of the 9th Circuit. So what do you think about the decision? In a neck to neck fight to rival the Super Bowl itself, with an unprecedented amount of votes, the win finally went to this Sleepy Hollow restaurant.
The inaugural edition of our new Food Fight feature, surveying the best of Hastings, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, Ardsley, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, was a big hit. With a huge amount of voters (2,131) weighing in, the fight was overwhelmingly pitted between Tarrytown contender little b's (with 854 or 40% of the votes) and Sleepy Hollow victor Bridge View Tavern (with 1,044 or 48% of the votes). Both deserve congrats and your patronage, so go taste those wings for yourself. Stay tuned later this week when we search for Best Sushi of the Rivertowns.
Mother-centric reflections and POLL on Rivertown life and the fun of everything surrounding the Super Bowl.
I can look at football, but I can't see it. I may seem to be staring at the flatscreen high-def TV, but ask me anything about the game – the score, a huge play that just happened, which team is which – and I'm a total blank. However, I can talk about the Super Bowl's naked M&M commercial, the unflattering way football players' butts are packed into shiny tights, my aversion to concussion-seeking sports, how Madonna miraculously blasted back into the innards of the stage or shattered into anti-matter or worm-holed herself into another dimension in the name of World Peace or whatever the heck happened to her. Has anyone seen Madonna since? Should we be worried? This may be the first Game in my lifetime, no joke, that I've ever gone out …

Remy is looking for a home.
From the SPCA of Westchester: This sweet beagle/terrier mix is about 3-years-old. Remy was rescued from a high-kill shelter so she could get a second chance! She is very funny to watch play…a bit goofy. Remy loves everyone she meets, but is a little shy around men. She loves kids though! She will make a wonderful companion and would love a family! See here for more information about the SPCA of Westchester or call 914-941-2896 ext. 22.

When Governor Cuomo was inaugurated, he gallantly rode into town brandishing a shiny tax-cutting sword, extolling the need for fiscal responsibility and sacrifice by all New Yorkers and municipalities. Unnecessary programs would be slashed, necessary ones trimmed and we would have to learn to live within our means. He claimed we needed to get our financial house in order to stop the flight of residents and businesses to states with affordable taxes and standard of living. We would stop all the Ponzi Financial schemes that would leave our children holding the bag. Then something happened. Governor Cuomo drank the “Legacy” Kool-Aid and decided we need a new and bigger Tappan Zee Bridge along with 15 Billion Dollars of other road projects. …
Vote in our poll and tell your favorite (and least favorite) commercials from last night in the comments section below.
I have to admit, I generally watch the biggest football game of the year only for the commercials. Sometimes they're funny—sometimes touching, audacious, political, mawkish clever, (often chauvinistic)... This year's, I have to say, were somewhat of a letdown. By far, the biggest advertisers were car companies, including: Acura, Audi, Cadillac, Hyundai, Toyota and Volkswagon. Other industries that invested $3.5 million for 30-second slots (according to a New York Times article published Friday) were: Internet sites, food companies and movies. And, of course, there were the Super Bowl mainstays like Anheuser-Busch (Bud and Bud Lite) and Coca-Cola. My favorite didn't come until after Madonna's half-time show. It was a Bud Lite ad, featuring…

Heather Borden Herve sees political pressure as he motivator in the Komen Foundation's initial cutoff of aid to Planned Parenthood and public outcry as the cause of the Komen Foundation's later reversal of that decision.
Whew! That was close ... for a moment there I thought someone was saying that politics was more important than the health of all women. I, and millions of others, were under the impression that once again women were being used as pawns in the political game. That was the message sent by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, the leading fundraiser for breast cancer research and support money. Up until this past week, the organization had done much to further women’s health with its pink ribbon campaign of awareness and advocacy, and its far-reaching fundraising efforts. But this week Komen made a move that shocked many: Seeming to bow to conservative pressure, they announced they were withdrawing funding support for Planned Parenthood…

dieghg, I agree with you that this is a California issue, what I was talking about was NYS, and not taking into account federal issues. I agree with you about DOMA, however, I think that too will be struck down by the Supreme Court at some point. DOMA, by the way, proves my point, these issues need to be dealt with by legislators, not voted on. The safeguard is the Supreme Court and that's the …   more ›
