Approximately 500 people gathered to welcome the year of the dragon at the Westchester Association of Chinese Americans' 23nd annual Chinese New Year program at New Rochelle High School on Saturday, Feb. 4.
Hui Huang of Croton-on-Hudson and Erqian Na of Yonkers hand-rolled, filled and steamed dumplings for an eager crowd of children in the cafeteria at New Rochelle High School on Saturday. "You like them, yes?" Huang asked Brian Chin, 5, of Mamaroneck as he and his brother Ethan, 8, took turns crimping the doughy edges of the dumplings. "Be careful, it's hot," she warned Katie Yacoub, 11, of Eastchester. Nearby, Eileen Wang of Valhalla played a modified game of peekaboo with her 3-year-old daughter Emma who was trying on an elaborate, child-sized lion mask at the dance workshop. Although the Westchester Association of Chinese Americans hosts the event, the gathering is a combined effort bringing together sponsors TD Bank and PepsiCo as well …

The author contemplates the importance of parents working together for the good of the next generation.
In an ideal world, there should be no such thing as bullying. A child would be so supported and positive they would never feel the kind of hopelessness that causes anyone to take their own life. Unfortunately, we don't live in an ideal world. If we did, the parents of Phillip Parker, a student at Gordonsville High School, TN, would have spent past weeks planning his future instead of his funeral. On occasion, this column has inspired opposing commentary that expressed a “kids will be kids” attitude. Some have shared stories of bullying when they were kids and how it made everybody stronger. Of course it’s true, life isn’t fair, and our children are not perfect. Bullying does exist and childhood is meant to teach life lessons. Children have…

Police and school officials may think it's not a widespread problem but at least a few parents of recent victims of theft feel otherwise. Should kids be allowed to bring these items to school in the first place?
A 10th grader has her iPod Touch with her at school. During class it's in her pocket. She realizes in the middle of class that the iPod is missing; she tells the teacher immediately. The student suspects that one of two boys sitting right behind her has the device. The teacher tries to find it on the boys but the search yields nothing. The teacher dismisses the class, including one upset girl. Various questions may arise from this true scenario, the first issue we are addressing in a new occasional series exploring how technology is not only changing the interactions between people but people themselves. Why is the student bringing a $200+ device to school in the first place? Is it the role of a teacher to police such items? How …
