Jeff Canning retired in January 2008 as senior news editor of The Journal News after 42 years as a reporter and editor for the Harrison-based  newspaper and its predecessors, including The Evening Star of Peekskill.  That summer he became a season ticket holder of the Fishkill-based Hudson Valley Renegades, a Class A farm team of Major League Baseball's Tampa Bay Rays. He lives in Cortlandt and is president of the Van Cortlandtville  Historical Society.
