Sports Roundup – April 23-29

Girls softball and lacrosse teams excelled this week.

Varsity Girls Lacrosse, Apr. 29

After the first half of the game against the Pelham Pelicans, one could have easily described the game as "out of reach" for the Horsemen ladies. However, if they missed the second half, then they certainly did not witness the surge of a tremendous comeback by the Sleepy Hollow team. Score at the end of the second half was 2-12 – the score at the end of the game was 17-21. The comeback was a spectacular effort from the entire team that left both coaches extremely proud. Offensively for Sleepy Annelise Birrittella led the attack with 5 goals and 2 assists, as well as Jen Angevine, who scored 4 goals and had 4 assists. Also chipping in for the offensive comeback effort were Rachel Swenson, who scored 3 goals, Marisa Weissman, who netted 3 goals as well, Andrea Alvarez, who scored 2 goals and added 2 assists, and Gabby Cellante, who had 3 assists. Defensively in goal, Vali Morales, 3 saves, and Bobbi Shortell, 9 saves, did their best to fend off the persistent Pelican offensive attackers. The Sleepy Hollow Horsemen ladies, now with a record of 5-5, played against Albertus Magnus on Friday.

The JV boys' lacrosse team played host to a very good Scarsdale Raiders team. On the brisk spring day, the young horsemen played a passionate, aggressive, and much improved game. The Horsemen let up 2 quick goals, but stormed back with precise passing and great bounce shots by Ben Parens and Colby Stein. The game went back and forth, with 3 lead changes and ties. Trailing 7-4 with less then 3 minutes to play, the Horsemen put together a two-goal rally that fell just short. Kieran Brenna nearly got off a last second shot to tie the game. The Horsemen fell 7-6, but should be very proud of their improvement over the past two weeks.
