Update: Woman Killed Was Longtime Volunteer

Police say the driver was backing up his pickup truck at Phelps Hospital when he struck the 81-year-old Croton woman.

Update, Thursday, 11:27 a.m.: The hospital has confirmed reports that Joan Hartney, 81, who died hours after a truck hit her in the Phelps parking lot, was a longtime volunteer there. 

Mary Sernatinger, Director, Marketing/Communications for Phelps shared this statement on behalf of the hospital:

We are deeply saddened and distressed by the tragic accident that occurred on our hospital grounds yesterday morning that involved a member of our volunteer staff, Joan Hartney. Our hearts go out Joan’s family. She was a wonderful woman and a valued volunteer at Phelps for many years.

Update, Thursday, 9:16 a.m.: The driver and the elderly woman struck, who later died, have been identified today.

Police Chief Gregory Camp confirmed that the driver of a 1999 Ford F350 pickup truck is an employee of Phelps Memorial Hospital. Dennis Uy, 47, of Spring Valley, was backing up when striking Joan Hartney, 81, of Croton.  

Hartney was declared dead a few hours later after suffering traumatic injuries to her legs and a head wound. 

"We do not expect to arrest or summons the driver," said Camp, though "the investigation process is continuing."

Update, Wednesday, 3:15 p.m.: The 81-year-old woman from Croton hit by a truck this morning in the Phelps Memorial Hospital lot was pronounced dead this afternoon.

The Westchester County Medical Examiner has been notified, Sleepy Hollow Police Chief Camp reports, and is conducting their investigation. The name of the accident victim is not being released at this time.

She was pronounced dead at 12:59 p.m. after sustaining what was described as serious trauma to her legs and a head injury when she was struck by an employee pickup truck rigged with a plow and sander.

Camp reports no charges have been filed, no summons issued. The police investigation is ongoing.

On Wednesday March 20, 2013 at about 8:54 am the Sleepy Hollow Police Department received a call reporting a pedestrian struck by a truck at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, between the 755 Building and the Parking Garage. Officers responded and the Sleepy Hollow Ambulance was dispatched and responded.

The pedestrian appears to have been struck by a pickup truck, equipped with plow and sander. The vehicle, registered to Phelps Hospital, was being operated by one of their employees.

The pedestrian, an 81 year old female, received trauma to the lower extremities as well as a head injury. She was transported by ambulance to the emergency room.

An investigation is being conducted by the Sleepy Hollow Police Department, with assistance of the Westchester County Department of Public Safety Accident Investigation Unit.

No further information is available for release at this time.
