ME: Bronx Woman Struck by Car on Wildey Street Has Died

One of the two women standing on the Tarrytown sidewalk last week when they were struck by a suddenly accelerating car has since died, the Westchester County Medical Examiner reports.

On the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 20, responders performed CPR at the scene on Wildey Street on Maria Tavarez, 63, of Marcy Place in the Bronx. She was then rushed to Westchester County Medical Center.

Tavarez remained in critical condition at the hospital for four days before she was pronounced dead on Nov. 24 at 6:18 p.m.

The medical examiner listed a number of injuries she sustained, from multiple force injuries, organ laceration, to spinal shock and widespread traumatic brain injury.

Various witnesses said at the time that prospects looked bleak for the victim. “She did not look good,” one woman said.

A 53-year-old female driver from Tarrytown apparently plowed through the Wildey Street entrance to Walgreens, going in the wrong direction. She drove through a fence and a small tree before striking the two women standing on the sidewalk, Lt. William Herguth said. Officials said the cause of the sudden acceleration is under investigation.

Tavarez was reportedly waiting for the bus. The other victim, a 45-year-old woman from Danbury, CT, sustained less serious injuries, Herguth said.
