Bring Out Your Pets

The sixth annual pet parade is coming down Broadway (from T.F. Andrews to Whimsies) tonight at 7 p.m.

Tonight will certainly be dog-centric, though it needn't be. Third Friday Pet parade coordinator (and owner of ) Laura Haupt said in past years there's been a hermit crab, guinea pigs, parrot, one cat (with a very brave owner). Mostly dogs though, "because they're the easiest."

The dogs and others who come (petless people can bring stuffed animals or maybe just dress like one?), will march at 7 p.m. from to , led by Christopher Reising on flute. In the back lot of Whimsies until 9 p.m., there will be about a dozen pet-centric vendors with treats, training and more.

Then there's the contests for which these pets have certainly been preparing. Judges (TBD) will award prizes and gifts for such categories as Waggiest Tail, Best Dressed, Cutest, Smallest, and of course Best of Show.

May the best pet win.

(Then to continue with a different twist on the dog theme, you can taste the offerings of the new shop on Main, enjoying a "soft" opening today and serving up a few artisanal sausage varieties.)
