Dr. Adila Goldman, Active at Kendal, Dies

Goldman was a teacher, practitioner and musician who was one of the original residents of the Kendal-on-Hudson community.

The following comes from Coffey Funeral Home:

Adila S. Goldman, MD, of Sleepy Hollow, NY and former longtime resident of Teaneck died November 8, 2012 at the age of 82.

Born in Jerusalem on January 24, 1930, she was the daughter of Michael and Ida Barnea Elroy. She studied medicine in Geneva, Switzerland where she met her husband Adolph Goldman. In 1957, they came to the United States. Dr. Goldman was the former Director of Inpatient Psychiatric Services at Metropolitan Hospital. She also taught at NY Medical College. She was a member of the American Psychiatric Assn., the Ethical Cultural Society and she was a musician actively involved with the American Recorder Society. Adila was very active in the Kendal-on-Hudson community where she was one of the original residents.

Adila is survived by her loving children Daphne Goldman (Jane Hix); Ron (Julia) Goldman and Nurit (Michael) Finn. She is also survived by her grandchildren Avi, Shoshana and Talia Goldman and Daniel and Gabriel Finn as well as her sisters Dalia Priver, Adina Obler and Tamara Ben-Ari and her brother-in-law Irwin Goldman. Her husband Adolph predeceased her in 1992.

Services are private. Donations in her memory may be made to the American Heart Assn. or the New Israel Fund.

When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
