Mary Joan Cannoles, Retired GM Secretary, Dies at 81

Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Her Funeral mass will be Thursday at Transfiguration Church at 10:00 with interment to follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.

Mary Joan (Shroba) Cannoles, Retired General Motors Secretary, 81, died Saturday October 12 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, after suffering a stroke last month.

Mrs. Cannoles was born on January 7, 1932, on Coprock Road in Pocantico Hills, to the late Stephen and Mary (Fetch) Shroba.  She was raised in North Tarrytown. (now Sleepy Hollow), and graduated from Pocantico Hills Central School in 1948 and North Tarrytown High School in 1952.

Mrs. Cannoles worked as a secretary to the Traffic Manager at the former General Motors - Tarrytown Plant for over 30 years, retiring on April 1, 1983.  The plant closed June 1996.

Mary was a member of the Sleepy Hollow Ladies Sokol Lodge # 42W, serving as their president from 2000-2009.  She was also a member of the Sleepy Hollow Senior Citizens as well as the Transfiguration Church Senior Citizens. Along with her late husband Gordon, did much volunteer work in past years for the American Diabetes Association, Lower Hudson Valley Chapter.

On June 8, 1974, she married her beloved husband, Gordon L. Cannoles, at Holy Cross Church in North Tarrytown.  She was a life long parishioner of Holy Cross until it closed in April 2007.  She most recently was a parishioner of Transfiguration Church in Tarrytown.

Mrs. Cannoles is survived by her Step-son, Gordon L. Cannoles II and his wife Connie of Arlington, Texas, Step-daughter, Martha Pauling, also of Arlington, Texas, Five Step-grandchildren.  Sister-in-law, Roseanna Shroba, Niece and Goddaughter, Roseanna (Shroba) Alarcon (Carlos), Nieces, AnneMarie Smith (Dan), Suzanne Leveckis (Renny), Karen (Shroba) Ferguson, Nephew and Godson, Stephen Hopkins of Black Hawk, Colorado. Nephews, Steven Shroba, Robert Shroba (Kathy), Charles Shroba and Richard Shroba (Dawn) as well as many Great Nieces and Nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by brothers, John, Joseph, Vincent, William and the babies Stephen and Stephen; her sisters Mary, Agnes, Anna, Pauline and Alice and nephew, Vincent Paul Shroba.

She loved her family and was always there to help them. She would always leave with "I Love You".  She will be missed tremendously.
