Blame it on the Polar Vortex: Ice, Pipe and Pothole Problems in Villages

The list of incidents police in both Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown responded to lately related to the cold weather is long. 

In Tarrytown...

Ice 

_A caller requested the Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps for an employee at Tarrytown House Estate who had fallen in the ice in the parking lot the night of Jan. 10. The person was transported to Phelps.

_A car accident with injuries was reported on Neperan Road at 10:41 p.m. Police reported finding however no injuries at the scene, but a big mess. 

They were four cars involved, said Lt. William Herguth, though none were damaged enough to need towing assistance. 

Herguth said three cars hit each other in succession, a chain reaction on the ice. The fourth car "skidded off the road to avoid the other accident."

_Minutes later, a caller asked for help with her car sliding on the ice on Martling Avenue at 10:56 p.m. She had slid and struck the curbing and incident was noted the record, while officials closed the Avenue due to icy conditions. 

_A person ran into headquarters saying a woman had slipped on the ice outside at Depot Plaza and was lying in the middle of the roadway at 11 p.m. Police called an ambulance as she had a cut on her forehead. She was taken by Irvington Ambulance to Phelps.

_While driving down Church Street, a caller reported at 11:12 p.m. that she slid into a parked car due to icy conditions. Police requested the DPW to salt the roadway and both parties exchanged information. 

_An accident was reported at the same time on Wildey Street and North Broadway, with one car striking another that was parked on Wildey. 

_At midnight, there was another ice accident on Wildey Street, with a car striking a parked car. 

_A South Broadway woman called an ambulance for her 58-year-old son at 12:11 a.m. who slipped on the ice at had injured his arm. The man was taken to Phelps by TVAC. 

_A caller reported LeGrande Avenue was unpassable due to icy conditions at 4:50 a.m. Police notified the DPW. 

_At 6:20 that morning of Jan. 15, a car was reported to be off the roadway on Towerhill Road. Officers responded and requested TVAC for airbag deployment and towing to remove the car which sustained front end damage.

Tarrytown police asked Sleepy Hollow police to block traffic at County House Road and Route 448 to due icy conditions on Towerhill Road. The car had skidded on the ice and struck a tree, Herguth said. 

TVAC reported taking both the driver and the one passenger to Phelps for back and neck pain.

Pipe

A caller reported from West Main Street that a fire alarm was sounding and a large amount of water was pouring out of a resident's front door on Jan. 9 just after 10 a.m. 

The fire department arrive and reported there was a broken water pipe. 

Pothole

A caller reported there was a pothole on Benedict Avenue east of Martling on Jan. 12 at 1:23 p.m. Police would alert the highway department. 

In Sleepy Hollow...

Ice

Roads were reportedly getting slick by 10:08 p.m. on Jan. 10. The highway department was called to get out with the sanders and a few ice-related incidents ensued. 

A caller reported she was stuck on the ice on College Avenue the morning of Jan. 11 at 6:15 a.m. The caller was given a number for towing and DPW salted the area. 

However, the village truck sanding on the street got in an accident on the ice itself. Police responded at 7:26 a.m. to take pictures of the damage. The truck had hit a parked car with no injuries reported. Only the car sustained minor damaged, Police Chief Gregory Camp said.

Pipe

A Depeyster Avenue caller reported they weren't home but someone told them that there was a broken water pipe in the Depeyster Street residence. The DPW was contacted and would have someone shut off the water on Jan. 15 at 7:02 p.m. 
The fire department responded to help assist with the water removal. FD reported the water had been shut down and the homeowner would follow through the rest.
