F(r)ight Night: Halloween Police Reports

There were only minor incidents surrounding Halloween events in the villages but one night full of combat.

In Sleepy Hollow, the worst that police reported happening related to Halloween was a few phones lost in the hay of the haunted hayride and one kid waving a stick.

A caller on October 27 at 10:17 p.m. reported a kid was swinging a stick at passersby on the hayride on New Broadway. Officers reported the kid was not swinging it maliciously but was just playing around. Father would be bringing the kids into the house for the night.

Though organizers warned patrons not to use their phones on the hayride, two people ended up reporting phones lost in the hay after their haunted trip. On Oct. 28 at 12:45 p.m. a woman came to headquarters to report the loss the night prior of an HTC EVO.  At 2:54 p.m., a woman came in to report the loss of her Apple iPhone 4 with a blue cover. She was visiting from Texas.

In Tarrytown however, the night of October 27's parade/block party, there seemed to be something angry in the air.

Call it f(r)ight night.

At 11:26 p.m., numerous 911 calls came in for a large fight in progress at 49 E. Sunnyside Lane, the Bidle House. Officers found a non-domestic dispute in progress over an issue with a parking attendant. Parties were dispersed.

Minutes later, at 11:33 p.m, numerous 911 calls reported a large fight at the Tapp Bar on North Broadway. Sleepy Hollow PD was notified and responded for assistance. People had left the bar prior to police arrival; police searched the area and didn’t find anyone. Report for an “unruly premise” was completed.

At 11:43 p.m., a person came into police headquarters to report a heated verbal dispute between numerous people behind the train station on Green Street. Officers found no one at the scene.

At 12:02 a.m. that night, a caller reported the group fighting at the Tapp may now be in front of the bar. But officers didn’t find anyone.

And this continues slightly to the next day. On Oct. 28 at 4:10 p.m. A caller reported a verbal dispute in the parking lot of C-Town. Officer reported one of two parties fighting had already left the scene. Person remaining said the fight was over a parking space.

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
