Update: Long Island 23-Year-Old Dies from Gunshot to Head in Tarrytown

Tarrytown Police on Tuesday afternoon released the name of the woman slain on Labor Day afternoon as Megan Bookstaver of Hicksville, New York.

Bookstaver, 23, was apparently in the fourth floor bedroom of the luxury riverfront townhouse in the Hudson Harbor complex with two other unnamed people.

They were "examining firearms when one was discharged," Lt. William Herguth said.

Bookstaver was struck in the head and was declared dead upon police arrival after they received a 911 call from someone at 157 West Main Street at 4:21 p.m., Monday, September 2.

Bookstaver's body was taken to the Westchester County Medical Examiner's office for further investigation. The weapons, several of which were found at the crime scene but which have remained unidentified, were also taken in for study. 

The Medical Examiner’s office said “we are not allowed to give out any further information on this case at this time,” and referred Patch to the local and county police and the District Attorney’s office.

Though no arrest has been made, suspects identified, or even a homicide either accidental or intentional declared, District Attorney office spokesman Lucian Chalfen said that his office will go to any death scene “unless it’s an obvious suicide.” But they have no more information until, and if, an arrest is made. "The police are the leading agency on this," Chalfen said.

Meanwhile, Lt. Herguth warns that this process will not yield any quick answers. "The examination of evidence has just begun and will take some time," he said. 

Police said they are conducting interviews and categorize the death now as "suspicious."

With the police tape and cruisers cleared from outside the home as of Tuesday morning, everything seemed normal – save for the group of news crews vans parked in front.

The home is listed online as the residence of Robert Gaulin, a high-profile entertainment and media lawyer practicing in Manhattan. He and his wife have a son and daughter in their 20s. The family moved to the Tarrytown complex in 2010 after selling their $2.5 million home in Rye. Both children graduated from Rye Country Day School.

LoHud.com has reported that the Gaulin parents were downstairs and the son, Eric, on the fourth floor during this incident. The website also reports that the son has not talked to police yet and has retained a lawyer. 

Bookstaver is listed in her Google+ profile as a student at Mercy College and an employee of Woodbury Road Animal Hospital on Long Island.
