Sleepy Hollow Cops Respond to Citizen Anxieties over Spittle, Knocks, Furniture

iPhone Stolen by Student?

A caller reported her white iPHone 5 was missing on Jan. 10 at 5:45 p.m. she believed she lost it at work on that day in another town. 

The 'find my iPhone' app reported the phone was at 127 Beekman Avenue, which she believed may be a student's house. She wished the phone returned but did not wish to press charges. 

The phone was found at a nearby apartment on the first floor and was taken from the youth she found with it. The phone was returned to the woman who did not wish to file a complaint. 

Abandoned Pets?

A caller on Clinton Street reported that there was a pit bull that appeared to have been abandoned in an unoccupied apartment on Jan. 11 at 9:50 p.m.

Police saw through a slightly open window, a small pit bull and a cat that "seemed to be neglected. There was a lack of furniture in the apartment and garbage all around," the police report said.

Police contacted the SPCA who said they would come in the morning to investigate. 
Police returned to put some food through the window and take photos. 
The next day at noon, police met the SPCA officer there. The building superintendent would open the apartment where they found no animals at the time. 

Chief Camp said the tenants were in the process of moving out.

Evacuated for Gas 

Police were called to 43 Elm Street on Jan. 12 at 5:51 a.m. for a gas leak. Police reported a strong odor of gas and contacted Con Edison. 

Residents of 43 and 45 Elm Street were evacuated, with the 43 family going to stay with a relative. 

45 Elm Street residents were let into the senior center. 
The fire department got into a vacant house at 39 Elm Street through a window. 

Con Ed checked and advised that all residents were able to return within about a half hour. They had a car removed and stayed on scene to fix the problem. Dig Safely contacted police to report an emergency dig for a gas leak in front of 34 Elm Street at 7:23 p.m. 

Scratches

A River Street caller reported her car had been damaged sometime over night on Jan. 12. Officers confirmed there were scratches throughout the car's body. 

A New Broadway reported her car had been keyed on Jan. 15. She said she parked her car in the southwest lot of the hospital on Jan. 14 at 8:30 a.m. When she returned at 4:50 p.m., she found that the driver's side fender and front door had been keyed. There were no suspects or witnesses at the time. Police took photos.

Police are considering both cases criminal mischief.

Raccoon

On Jan. 13 at 9:31 a.m. a New Broadway caller reported there was possibly a sick raccoon near the basement door of the building. Police reported the raccoon was dead and will be discarded by the building owner. 

Scrap Metal 

Phelps called police asking for help while they spoke to men picking through garbage in the hospital dumpster on Jan. 14 at 12:41 p.m. 

Police reported finding two men looking for scrap metal in the dumpster. They were told to stop and that they were no longer welcome to look for scrap metal on hospital property. 

Spat

A Barnhart Avenue caller reported to police that her fiancé was spat upon the other day and now he didn't feel well. She didn't an ambulance for him, however, and just wanted to noted that there a car parked near Beekman and Hudson Street taking up two spaces. 

Police issued summons to the car for parking outside pavement markings. 

Anxiety

A College Avenue caller said her next door neighbor had been knocking on her door causing her to have anxiety attacks, for which she had been consulting a doctor regularly and taking medication. 

The issue had been brought up to the attention of the housing authority by the complainant, who was afraid the neighbor might become angry if a warning letter came to him from the HA. 

The matter was noted for the record to assist the HA in the matter. 

Moving Furniture?

A Valley Street complainant told police that people had come into her house and moved her furniture. Police brought a Portuguese speaking officer to translate for further and discovered the woman had Alzheimer's and the furniture had not been moved.

Theft

A caller reported someone entered her bedroom and took items from her son's bedroom on College Avenue. Officers went on Jan. 15 at 7:18 p.m. and reported that the bedroom door appeared to have been pried open with several items reported stolen. 

Police took pictures and interviewed the residents. They had no further details on the case under investigation.
