Use Patch to Announce Tag Sales, Not Trees

The Sleepy Hollow Police Department found a few sale signs nailed into Village trees this week; this follows a note from the Chamber of Commerce to kindly remove signs left behind.

Last week in Sleepy Hollow, police noted several signs for garage sales had been nailed into the village trees. This occurred on Cortlandt Street (home of the Virgin of Guadalupe tree!) and on North Broadway.

Police removed the signs and pulled out the nails, then they contacted the owner of the signs to advise them of the village ordinances regarding the posting of bills/flyers. (That is, save it for a bulletin board.)

Sleepy Hollow Police report they will monitor these trees for damage.

Meanwhile, the Chamber of Commerce for Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow kindly requested that people please remove their signs after their sales. Tarrytown was certainly overrun with pole paper after their recent Tarrytown-wide yard sale shopping spree.

But might I throw in another suggestion? Use Patch! Every Friday at 2 p.m. we post listings of all the tag sales we can find in the region. Send your listing to sarah.studley@patch.com, or find the article here on Friday and add your sale info into the comments.

The trees, poles, Police and Chamber thank you, as does Patch!

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
