Bridge Work 'Ramping Up'; Big Cranes Arriving

Preconstruction work on a new Tappan Zee Bridge will become increasingly visible as weeks progress into the summer, spokesperson Brian Conybeare told reporters after a recent boat tour.

In their usual Friday project update, the Thruway Authority and the Tappan Zee Constructors today announced that residents will soon see the arrival of two large cranes.

Not the famous "Left Coast Lifter", mind you -- we can expect the world's largest floating crane to come by year's end -- but two barge-mounted machines to be used for pile placement for the bridge's substructure. They will be parked on the north side of the bridge closer to the Rockland County side.

At the height of construction, possibly in two years, there could be as many as 100 barges in the river with 25 cranes. The waterway would never be shut down, officials said, and the work can continue year-round as long as the ice doesn't get too bad.

Efforts are underway to get construction-voyeurs a nice spot to best view the action. A possible viewing point on the Tarrytown shore is pending approvals and funding.
